Dental Veneers; What maintenance do they require?

Dental veneers; What care do they require?

Within the dental aesthetic treatments, there are dental veneers both made of composite and ceramic or porcelain. Dental veneers are thin ceramic layers that are cemented on the tooth itself, changing its shape and color.

This treatment is very popular because it is a personalized solution for each patient that is quick and natural to improve the smile. Another aspect that makes them popular is their durability.

Even though it is a treatment that lasts a lot over time, it requires essential care that must be followed to avoid possible problems in the future.

Veneers are made of porcelain or composite (resin) that are adhered to the teeth, so we must take care of them as much or more than the natural teeth themselves.

Durability of dental veneers?

Within the two types of veneers mentioned above, ceramic and composite, it is composite veneers that require greater maintenance and less durability compared to ceramic veneers. The average durability of ceramic veneers is between 10 and 15 years.

How do you care for veneers?

1. Food
This aspect is essential to take into account when we are carriers of composite veneers. This material tends to stain over the years and especially with the consumption of certain beverages or foods such as: coffee, tea, wine, curry, soy sauce …
You should also avoid eating very hard or sticky foods as they run the risk of fracture or debonding. You have to avoid nuts, bite into ice, nougat …

2. Tobacco
This habit also affects composite veneers as it also stains them. Therefore, it is advisable to minimize consumption to stop the habit completely.

3. Hygiene:
In the case of veneers, we must follow the same guidelines as with natural teeth. Tooth brushing 3 times a day, flossing, mouthwash and dental cleaning every 6 months.

4. Mouth guard:
It is highly recommended that if you do contact sports you wear a mouth guard to protect the veneers from any hit.

5. Maintenance:
Composite veneers require more frequent maintenance than ceramic veneers. It requires a polishing treatment depending on the stain they acquire over time.
