Invisible orthodontics – advantages and disadvantages

Invisible orthodontics:

Invisible orthodontics is also known as Invisalign or removable orthodontics. This type of orthodontics has become very popular in recent years as it has several advantages. Among these advantages is that apart from aligning the teeth and that it is practically imperceptible to the eye.

Once the patient decides that he wants to undergo orthodontic treatment, our orthodontist will propose the type of treatment that best suits him depending on his case. In this post we want to explain to you what are the advantages and disadvantages of invisible orthodontics.

Advantages of invisible orthodontics:

The great benefit of invisible orthodontics is, as its name suggests, the fact that it is transparent. Therefore, the virtue of being invisible makes this orthodontic treatment ideal for patients who do not want to sacrifice facial aesthetics during the treatment period.

In addition, being removable appliances makes this option the most hygienic of all possible treatments. The brushing technique does not have to vary from the usual one and the splints or braces can be washed and brushed with soap and water. The possibility of food remains between the teeth causing tooth decay or gum disease is much lower than with conventional orthodontics (braces).

Another great advantage is that they can be removed to eat, so they will not get dirty or stained when ingesting drinks or food. It is not even necessary to change the diet due to the fact that a bracket can be detached.

Likewise, transparent splints do not generate sores or irritation that conventional orthodontic braces can sometimes generate.

Disadvantages of invisible orthodontics:

One of the main disadvantages of invisible orthodontics (Invisalign) is that it is removable. Thus you run the risk of losing your devices. It is only indicated in really responsible patients.

In very bruxist patients (who grind their teeth a lot) it may also be contraindicated. Due to the fact that they can deform or break these splints.

Another disadvantage is that the cost of treatment is higher than conventional orthodontics. This is because each splint is tailor-made and personalized for each patient.

In addition, we must always remove them to eat and/or drink. Not only that, but it is contraindicated to ingest food and / or drinks that are not natural water.

At BLASI Clínica Dental Barcelona, our orthodontist will indicate the most appropriate treatment for your particular case.
