What is tongue cancer?

Tongue cancer originates in the tongue cells. It is not the only oral cancer that exists, but there are more types of cancer that damage the mouth. It is very important to know what type of cells are responsible for tongue cancer, as this helps to establish the most appropriate prognosis and treatment. This cancer usually originates in thin, smooth cells known as squamous cells, which completely cover the surface of the tongue. In the part where tongue cancer is revealed, it is also an important factor that determines the treatment.

It can manifest in two places:

In the throat, on the basis of the tongue, this type of cancer shows few signs and symptoms and therefore it is very difficult to detect. Most commonly, it is diagnosed at an advanced stage, and has already affected the lymph nodes in the neck.

In the mouth, it is in the place where it manifests with more signs and symptoms, as it is detected very quickly and in most cases it is only necessary to remove it with surgery.

In addition, it should be borne in mind that cancer that manifests at the base of the tongue, very frequently has to do with the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is another key factor for treatment and prognosis.

Which is the treatment?

Usually, treatment involves surgery to remove the tumor. You have to take into account the phase you are in, since sometimes there are also alternatives:

  • Targeted drug therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiotherapy

We want you to know that it is possible that these treatments if you are in an already advanced stage of cancer affect your ability to eat and talk. But there are rehabilitation teams dedicated to helping to cope with this changes.

At Clínica Blasi we want you to be informed, the most important thing is the oral health of our patients.
